A newborn baby girl has been rescued after being buried alive by her mother in Malawi. The incident took place in Lunzu, Blantyre, on August 1, 2023.

Jonas’ husband was not aware of the birth, and she told him that she had miscarried. However, she later went to Mlambe Hospital for medical treatment, and the nurses who were attending to her became suspicious.

Jonas eventually confessed to burying the baby, and police officers from Lunzu Police Unit were called to the scene. The baby was found alive and healthy, and she has been taken to hospital for further treatment.

Jonas is expected to be charged with concealing birth of a child. This is a serious offense in Malawi, and it is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

The rescue of this baby girl is a reminder of the dangers that newborn babies face in Malawi. According to UNICEF, Malawi has one of the highest rates of newborn mortality in the world. In 2020, an estimated 32,000 babies died in Malawi before their first birthday.

There are a number of factors that contribute to high rates of newborn mortality in Malawi, including poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and cultural practices that endanger newborns. However, the rescue of this baby girl shows that it is possible to save lives.

I hope that this incident will raise awareness of the challenges that newborn babies face in Malawi, and that it will lead to more efforts to save lives.
