Nigerian Labor Unions (NLC) Announce Indefinite Strike from October 3

Published

on

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congres (TUC) have announced their intention to embark on an indefinite strike from October 3, 2023.

The two unions made the announcement on Tuesday,

shortly after their National Executive Council (NEC) meetings in Abuja.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, explained that the indefinite strike became inevitable

owing to government’s lackadaisical stance in meeting demands raised by both unions.

“To this end, NECs of both unions having taken into consideration

the stance of government in the wake of the subsidy removal policy,

left them with no option than to call for an indefinite strike,” Ajaero said.

President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo, said that beginning from October 3rd,

all workers are expected to withdraw their services.

The unions are demanding, among other things, an immediate reversal of the removal of fuel subsidy,

an increase in the minimum wage to N50,000, and an end to the casualization of labor.

The indefinite strike is likely to have a significant impact on the Nigerian economy,

as it will cripple essential services such as transportation, healthcare, and education.

The unions have urged Nigerians to support them in their fight for a better life for all workers.
