Lagos Governorship Tribunal to Deliver Judgment Today

The Lagos State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal will today, September 25,
deliver judgment on the petitions filed by the governorship candidates of the Labour Party (LP), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor,
against the emergence of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in the state.
Rhodes-Vivour and Jandor are challenging the return and declaration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and
Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
as winners of the state governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Rhodes-Vivour, in his petition, is alleging that Sanwo-Olu was not qualified to run in the election
and that his victory was invalid due to corrupt practices and
non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
Adediran, in his petition, is alleging that Sanwo-Olu and
his deputy were not qualified to contest the election and that the LP candidate,
Rhodes-Vivour, was also not qualified to participate in the election.
He is urging the tribunal to invalidate the votes cast for both politicians and declare him the winner.
The tribunal will deliver its judgment today at 10:00 am.
All parties to the petition are expected to be in court for the judgment.
What to expect
The tribunal could deliver any of the following judgments:
Dismiss the petitions and uphold the victory of Sanwo-Olu.
Nullify the election and order a fresh election.
Nullify the results of some polling units and order a supplementary election.
Declare any of the petitioners as the winner of the election.
The tribunal’s judgment is final and cannot be appealed.
Implications of the judgment
The judgment of the tribunal will have a significant impact on the political landscape of Lagos State.
If the tribunal upholds Sanwo-Olu’s victory,
it will be a major victory for the APC and a setback for the opposition.
If the tribunal nullifies the election and orders a fresh election,
it will create an opportunity for the opposition to challenge the APC’s dominance of Lagos State.
And if the tribunal nullifies the results of some polling units and orders a supplementary election,
it could lead to a close and competitive race between the APC and the opposition.
In conclusion, The judgment of the Lagos State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal is eagerly awaited by all stakeholders.
The judgment will have a significant impact on the political landscape of Lagos State
and will determine who governs the state for the next four years.

Peter Obi is right to criticize the National Assembly for spending N60 billion on the purchase of SUVs for about 400 legislators.

Peter Obi is right to criticize the National Assembly for spending N60 billion on the purchase of SUVs for about 400 legislators.
This is a staggering amount of money, especially considering the fact that
Nigeria is facing a number of serious challenges, including poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.
The purchase of these SUVs is a clear example of the disconnect between the government and the people.
The legislators are clearly out of touch with the reality of the average Nigerian,
who is struggling to make ends meet.
The money that has been spent on these SUVs could have been used
to fund essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
It could have also been used to provide relief to the millions of Nigerians who are living in poverty.
Obi’s criticism of the National Assembly is a reminder
that the government needs to be held accountable for its spending.
The people have a right to expect that their tax money
is being used wisely and for the benefit of all Nigerians.
The National Assembly should immediately cancel the purchase of these SUVs and
redirect the money to more important and urgent needs.
The legislators should also be more mindful of the impact of their decisions on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Rivers Assembly set ablaze over alleged impeachment move

The Rivers State House of Assembly complex was set ablaze on Sunday night amid alleged moves by some lawmakers to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Sources said that some suspected arsonists gained entry into the complex around 9:30pm and set the building on fire.
The fire destroyed some properties inside the chamber, but no casualties were reported.
The police have confirmed the incident and said that they are investigating the cause of the fire.
However, some sources believe that the fire was a politically
motivated attack aimed at preventing the impeachment of Governor Fubara.
The alleged impeachment plot has been brewing for weeks, and there have been reports of threats
and intimidation against lawmakers who are seen as being opposed to Governor Fubara.
The fire at the Rivers State House of Assembly is a serious escalation of the political crisis in the state.
It is a clear attempt to undermine the democratic process and
to prevent the legislature from carrying out its constitutional duties.
The authorities must take swift action to bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice and
to ensure that the Rivers State House of Assembly is able to function freely.
