Davido Jumps to Toke Makinwa and Others’ Defense Amidst COP28 Backlash

The ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai has sparked a heated debate online,

with Nigerians criticizing the presence of several celebrities,

including media personality Toke Makinwa, at the event.

Many social media users questioned the celebrities’ environmental credentials and accused them of

“flying private jets to preach about climate change.” Some even went as far as to call them “hypocrites.”

However, music superstar Davido has come to the defense of these celebrities,

including Makinwa, his longtime friend.

In a series of tweets, Davido argued that their presence at COP28 can be a positive force.

“Instead of bashing our own, let’s encourage them to use their

platforms to raise awareness about climate change,”

Davido tweeted. “We all have a role to play, no matter how big or small.”

Davido further pointed out that many of the celebrities

who attended COP28 did so at their own expense,

demonstrating their genuine commitment to the cause.

“They weren’t invited by the government or any organization,” he said.

“They went there because they care.”

Davido’s intervention has sparked a mixed response online.

Some praised him for standing up for his friends and colleagues, while others remained unconvinced.

“They can raise awareness from anywhere,” one user commented.

“They didn’t need to fly to Dubai in private jets.”

“It’s not about bashing,” another wrote. “It’s about holding people accountable

for their actions, especially those with large followings.”

The debate around the role of celebrities in climate activism is likely to continue.

However, Davido’s stance highlights an important point:

regardless of their chosen profession, anyone can play a part

in raising awareness and advocating for change.
